Course description
This course examines foundational literature, classic theoretical frameworks, and groundbreaking studies that continue to shape modern ecology, including ecosystem ecology. Through a combination of readings, discussions, and group work, students develop an understanding of how ecological theory and approaches have evolved over the past century and how their own research relates to these conceptual foundations. Furthermore, students critically evaluate the assumptions, methods, and generality of classic studies. Finally, students design a study that tests or challenges the generality of a classic ecological theory.

Objectives
On completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain key theories and conceptual frameworks that have shaped the development of ecology over the past century.
- Critically evaluate foundational ecological studies, including their assumptions and experimental design.
- Synthesize connections between classic ecological literature and contemporary ecological research questions.
- With an oral presentation, explain how your own PhD research will test, extend, or challenge a foundational ecological concept.
Content
Teaching will include discussions with subject-matter experts. The course will also address the historical context of ecological science, including the limited representation of women in foundational literature and the historical dominance of English-language publications. International perspectives and links to sustainable development are considered through discussion of ecological research across different ecosystems and global environmental challenges. Mandatory elements include participation in discussions, written reflections, and presentation of a research idea related to a foundational ecological concept.
