Entry Requirements
- Knowledge equivalent to English 6 from Swedish upper secondary school
Objectives
The course intends to give an introduction to geographic information systems where social relevance and system integration stand in focus. On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Knowledge and understanding: Master basic principles of GIS and geographic analysis.
- Competence and skills: Apply GIS in standard software. Develop and automate GIS for user adapted needs and applications. Plan and implement GIS projects in adequate fields of application. Analyse and quantify geographic patterns, structures and correlations
- Judgement and approach: Critically search and quantify sources of errors in GIS and geographic analysis.
Content
The course presents geographic information systems (GIS) as a tool for planning, implementation and presentation of projects that handle geographically related information. It provides practically applicable knowledge of how spatial information can be analysed and presented by means of maps and deals with GIS in a system perspective, spatial data models, geodesy, geographic map services and products, satellite based positioning and remote sensing as well as cartography, map production and geographic analysis.
The teaching includes lectures and problem-oriented computer exercises in the form of web-based educational modules. The course combines compulsory and elective exercises so that they cover elements from data acquisition to geographic analysis and design of traditional as well as web-based maps.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Examination takes place with written examination as well as presentation of completed computer exercises. Passing the course requires - passed written examination - passed presentation of problem-based computer exercises, and - attendance at compulsory elements (lectures stated in the timetable).
