Objectives
The purpose of this course is to train students in integrating highly complex transdisciplinary perspectives into the planning and management of sustainably developing the urban landscape. Students also practise project work in groups.
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- analyse a specific Swedish municipality or urban area in relation to the people and processes involved in planning and administration that are strategically significant to sustainable urban development
- apply different methods for obtaining information and facts ahead of a change process in the urban landscape, such as site analysis or interviews
- reflect upon methodological challenges relating to the various knowledge acquisition methods
- apply both an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary mindset to the reflections on situations of planning and management and communicate these in a suitable manner
- suggest the implementation of one or more strategic measures for sustainable development and relate them to relevant organisations and processes as part of a specific context.
Content
The course addresses the development of the urban landscape from the perspective of stakeholders, based on both public and private interests. It emphasises management responsibility and planning, and practises the ability to propose strategically motivated actions towards sustainable urban development. Through projects closely linked to practice, students train their ability to think in processes, working with “horizontal and vertical collaborations” and manage conflicts of interest relating to change processes. Students identify values and significant stakeholders in specific urban development projects. Several methods are used to collect information, facts, and opinions in order to draw on different perspectives.
The course includes a number of inspirational lectures, lectures in methodology and extended group project work that will result in a proposal for planning and management strategies for a chosen urban landscape. The aim of the project work, its approach, results and target group determine the communication format to be chosen by the group. The presentation of the project work and oral presentations are compulsory course components, together with a supervision session focusing on methods.
Teaching formats
Critical thinking, problem solving, written and oral communication, cooperation and independence are all basic skills practised during the course, alongside time management and creativity.
Participation in presentations (interim, internal and final for the municipalities we are working with), project report submission and individual reflection are compulsory, In addition, there are two compulsory supervision sessions, one focusing on choice of method, and one being the last session before the final presentation.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
The examination involves an assessment of written assignments. To pass the course, students must successfully complete reports, presentations and participate in seminars. The requirements will be specified in the grading criteria by the start of the course.
