Entry Requirements
Physiotherapy degree. Basic knowledge in Swedish equivalent to what is required for general entry requirements for Swedish higher education at first-cycle level.
Objectives
The aim is to provide a general introductory course on working in animal health care, mainly regarding the horse, dog and cat.
After completing the course, the student should be able to
- give an overview of current legislation and constitutional knowledge regarding activities in animal health care
describe a correct working method for physiotherapists in animal health care, taking into account hygiene, infection control, occupational safety, ethics, and animal welfare
give an overview of the symptoms of the most common epizootic, zoonotic, and notifiable diseases,
- give an overview of the risks of developing resistance when using antibiotics,
- give an overview of relevant animal husbandry, normal behavior, and common behavioral disorders,
- give an overview of relevant anatomy and physiology,
- give an overview of sedation, anesthesia, pain relief, and euthanasia,
- give an overview of basic pharmacology.
Content
Subject-related content
The course covers general anatomy and physiology, with a focus on the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and circulatory and respiratory organs in dogs, cats, and horses. It also covers topics such as ethics and animal welfare, animal husbandry, ethology, constitutional law, epizootic and zoonotic diseases, antibiotic use, resistance development, healthcare hygiene, infection control and pharmacology.
Teaching formats
The course uses various teaching methods to promote student learning, including lectures and seminars. The course is conducted remotely, with some compulsory seminars.
