Objectives

The course provides students with basic knowledge and skills in organisational theory focusing on leadership using examples from forestry systems. The course also aims to equip the student to contribute to the development of sustainable working life. Finally, the course aims to develop the ability to use tools and methods to plan and lead development and change projects.

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

• explain the choice of organisational structure based on the organisation's objectives and activities/process
• describe the characteristics of different forms of leadership
• identify, argue, and discuss advantages and disadvantages of different methods to promote sustainable work life, e.g., motivation, communication, feedback, and conflict management
• describe the different phases of a project and the different roles in a project
• identify and use different methods of project planning
• relate organizational processes to economic, social and ecological sustainability
• explain and develop models and tools for project management

Content

The course introduces organisational structures and how it relates to the organisation's goals and activities. The course deals with different types of organisational structures and business work processes and analyses how different leadership styles affect the development of organisations. The characteristics of leadership and leadership styles are also discussed and linked to sustainable leadership. Furthermore, different aspects of leading organisations are analysed and discussed and how personal characteristics such as motivation, roles, communication, feedback, conflict management and work environment contribute to develop sustainable working life. Additionally, the course provides tools to explain and develop models for project management, for example according to ISO 21500:2012. Case studies are used to establish and evaluate requirements specifications, conduct risk assessments, and project scheduling.

Implementation
The course uses different teaching methods to promote student’s learning and discussions through lectures, seminars, and group exercises. Problem-based learning (PBL) via case studies is used continuously through the course.
