Objectives

The aim of the course is to develop a knowledge platform in green space management with particular focus on organizational and practical aspects.

Upon course completion the student will be able to:

• Describe, justify and perform different practical measures as well as explain how they influence the management of landscape function and character as well as place specific quality.
• Identify and analyse relevant vegetation as a central part of green space management.
• To plan, process and conclude a maintenance plan in writing (as part of a group assignment).
• Explain the importance of public and green space management to the landscape profession; from a general (visionary) level to a tactical (practical) and more detailed level.

Content

The course focuses on green space management and considers development in theoretical knowledge as well as practical experience. Theories, excursions and case studies help construct a reference from which critical discussions are made with regards to management and maintenance of public space.

Seminars, lectures and literature studies provide a platform for applied orientated assignments. Plant knowledge and strategic plant use are also included in this framework. Together, these different discourses are comprised and exposed in a final case study with the aim to initiate a holistic approach to public and green space management.

There may be mandatory exercises, excursions and seminars during the course..

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course

Written project report, literature seminar and presentation of exercises. Approved participation in compulsory elements. Approved participation in literature seminar. Successful presentation of project report. Successful presentation of exercises. ◾If the student fails a test, the examiner may give the student a supplementary assignment, provided this is possible and there is reason to do so. ◾If the student has been granted special educational support because of a disability, the examiner has the right to offer the student an adapted test, or provide an alternative assessment. ◾If changes are made to this course syllabus, or if the course is closed, SLU shall decide on transitional rules for examination of students admitted under this syllabus but who have not yet passed the course. ◾For the examination of a degree project (independent project), the examiner may also allow the student to add supplemental information after the deadline.
