Objectives
The aim of the course is to give the student basic knowledge of hard materials in landscape constructions and plant beds as well as its use and environmental impact. Landscape construction in urban environment is also an important part of the course.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for and evaluate the properties of different hard materials used within the field of landscape construction and have an understanding of their influence on the environment
- discuss grading and draining
- dimension plant beds according to AMA, a national reference work where exucution and material requirements are described
- apply methods and tools for superstructure sizing in order to solve technical landscape construction problems
- interpret and produce basic outdoor staircase- and walls-designs drawings
- write a concise thesis with requirements formal mainly reference management.
Content
The course deals with different materials of landscape construction based on the appearance, properties and environmental impact of the materials. The materials that are treated are mainly materials for paved surfaces, such as gravel, crushed rock, asphalt, concrete and natural stone, ceramic materials and rubber- and plastic material. Dimensioning and designs of superstructures and plant beds are central components in the course. Through literature studies, lectures, seminars, field trips and exercises are, knowledge of landscape construction, grading, choice of material and product knowledge given. Substructure design drainage and traditional and ecological stormwater management is treated briefly in the course. In the course, a smaller written assignment where layout, reference management and literature search in databases are in focus is included.
Compulsory components in the course are all study visits, field trips, practical exercises and overviews
