Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the student with basic knowledge in nutritional physiology, feedstuffs and feeding strategies for healthy horses, dogs, cats and to limited extent exotic pets.
After the course, the student should be able to:
generally describe the chemical composition of nutrients and their absorption and metabolism in horses, dogs and cats
account for nutritive requirements and feeding strategies for healthy animals, mainly horses, dogs and cats, and to lesser extent healthy exotic pets
describe and give suggestions of suitable feeds or feed ingredients and suitable amounts of feed for healthy horses, dogs and cats
give an overview of the importance of hygienic quality and handling of feeds, and have knowledge about common hygienic risks in feeds
have overall knowledge of relevant feed legislation
Content
Nutrient metabolism, feed science, nutritive requirements, suitable feedstuffs and amounts of feed and relevant feed legislation is covered in lectures, mandatory exercises, group exercises, seminars, cases and problem-based teaching.
