Knowledge equivalent to general entry requirements and Social Studies 1b or Social Studies 1a1+1a2.
Objectives
The aim in this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of organizational theory, including knowledge of different perspectives, concepts and models that are used to describe and discuss the organization of business ventures. The course will also contribute to the development of participants’ academic competencies, including critical thinking, academic discussion in oral and written form, and the ability to collaborate in groups.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Describe a firm’s structure, culture, leadership and strategy with concepts and models from organizational theory.
- Explain organizational change processes and decision-making.
- Explain organizations interaction with their environments, including their role in the sustainable use of bio-based natural resources.
- Demonstrate the ability to use basic concepts and models of organizational theory.
- Apply and discuss different perspectives of organization theory.
Content
The course includes lectures, guest lectures, seminars and exercises. Activities are carried out both individually and in groups.
The course provides an introduction to theories and models that explain how people organize their activities and how an organized venture is part of its surroundings. Different theoretical perspectives are introduced, using practical examples from different areas of interest such as agriculture, forestry, and sustainable development.
