Entry Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to 180 credits, including 90 credits within a particular major within humanities, social or natural sciences. Knowledge equivalent to English 6 (Swedish educational system).
Objectives
The objective of this course is to give the students opportunities to reflect on working in an organization in the field of rural development through doing an internship.
After completion of this course the student shall be able to:
- analyze how the work is organized, including analyzing gender and other social norms
- reflect on how rural development and sustainability is understood and practiced by the organization
- discuss ethical aspects of working with rural development.
Content
Thematic content
The main activity in this course is doing an internship in an organization working with rural development. During the internship the students write about their experiences of rural development work, and about the organizing of the work and work-place, including an analysis of gender and other social norms. The course includes students’ making reflections on practices of rural development, sustainability as well as ethical aspects of rural development work. The course comprises approximately eight weeks of practice, in the form of an internship, writing a reflective diary, writing a report and making an oral presentation of the report. The students should also communicate with a supervisor in the organization.
Implementation
The course uses different teaching methods to promote students' learning such as:
- active participation in work activities in an organization working with rural development
- keeping a reflective diary during the internship
- writing of a report, drawing on the reflective diary and internship experiences
- presenting the report orally.
The course focuses on the following general competencies: oral presentation; written communication; ability to work autonomously; plan and manage time; teamwork; critical thinking and problem solving.
The course includes mandatory attendance at the course introduction, and at the final presentation of the report.
Collaboration with society takes place through the course being an internship course, whereby the student is placed in an organization working with rural development.
