Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide students with in-depth knowledge of sustainable nursery production in Sweden, including propagation, cultivation, and handling of plant materials; detailed knowledge of nursery plants (shrubs, trees, and perennials) for use in gardens and landscapes; as well as a deeper understanding of the potential for establishment, growth, and development of plants in relation to growing site (habitat knowledge).
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Account for and explain practical and theoretical aspects of sustainable nursery production in Sweden.
- Identify a current, relevant basic assortment of nursery plants, and account for their origins from botanic, systematic, and geographic perspectives.
- Describe key factors and processes that affect plants in different environments.
- Analyze relationships between plant use, growth and development based on theories of habitat, hardiness, succession, competition, and climate change.
Content
Subject-related content:
The course is an advanced study in horticultural science with a specialization in the production and use of nursery plants. The main focus is on trees, shrubs and perennials suited to Swedish conditions, with applications in gardens, parks, urban environments and landscapes. Plant material is studied from a user and production perspective, including identification, habitat requirements and propagation. Based on theories of habitat, evolutionary adaptation, hardiness, competition, and succession, students will learn to justify plant selection for different horticultural environments and purposes. Considerable emphasis is placed on the future use of plants, how vegetation will be affected by climate change, and how these challenges can be addressed. The course also covers various theoretical and practical aspects for the production of nursery plants in Sweden, including general conditions and quality standards.
Implementation:
The course uses different teaching methods to promote student learning and discussion through:
- lectures (both web-based and live),
- demonstrations (in the classroom and in the field),
- teacher-led exercises and
- field trips, as well as
- self-study.
