Entry Requirements
The equivalent of 120 course credits at first cycle level of which 60 credits in one of the following subjects:
biology, animal science or agricultural sciences and English 6.
Objectives
The overall aim of the course is to provide a general understanding of forage production through a synergy between arable and animal farming, in the perspective of sustainable development and sustainable use of natural resources.
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
-describe the preconditions for sustainable production of forage on fields, meadows and semi-natural grasslands and the importance of forage production for agriculture
-suggest relevant process technologies and methods for forage harvest and storage; and evaluate the influence of these technologies and methods on the nutritional and hygiene quality of the feed
-suggest and describe relevant analyses for determining the nutritional content of forage and the feed value
-provide concrete guidance on issues that concern forage production and utilisation of forage and the use of semi-natural pastures from a production and nature conservation viewpoint
-analyse how different forage cultivation factors influence the quantity and nutritional quality of the forage as a feed for different animal species or for other purposes
-discuss and evaluate research results in the area.
Content
The course consists of lectures and the following compulsory components:
laboratory sessions, exercises, seminars, study visits and project work.
The course deals with forage cultivation, harvesting methods and conservation of feed for ley and other roughages, maintenance and use of temporary grasslands and meadow, and use and management of semi-natural grasslands.
The course also deals with methods for evaluating the nutritional quality of forage to be used for different categories of animals.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
-To obtain full credits for the course, students must obtain a pass grade in multiple choice tests and a written final examination, and submit an approved individual project report and reports on exercises.
-Approved participation in compulsory course modules, i.e. exercises, seminars, laboratory sessions, project work and study visits, is also required in order to obtain full credits for the course.
