Project based advanced course in Soil Science at the Dept. of Forest Ecology and Management
Course description
This is a course where you get a chance to “dive” deeper into a subject of your interest that relates to soil science. Here, students will work together with a supervisor to choose a relevant and manageable topic within the area of soil science. The project should be designed so that it can be completed within the available time (10 weeks) and generate a strong progression in the students’ own learning.
While students are expected to work independently, they will receive guidance and support from their supervisor throughout the process. Depending on the nature of the project, the course may also include lectures, hands-on exercises, lab-work, study visits, fieldwork, or reading assignments.
Students will learn how to search for, analyze, and discuss information from a scientific perspective. By the end of the course, students will be able to present their work orally, well-prepared seminar format, all within specified timeframes.

Objectives
The course aims to provide knowledge of how to plan and conduct a scientific study within the subject of Soil Science, and how to analyse and present its results.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- independently complete a scientific project
- identify and formulate a research question
- collect or retrieve data using scientific methods and analyse, discuss, and present the results
Content
To achieve the learning outcomes, the student shall, in consultation with a supervisor, identify a research question that is appropriate for the subject of Soil Science. The scope of the work should be such that it can be completed within the specified timeframe. The student works independently with guidance from a supervisor.
Mandatory activities such as lectures, exercises, study visits, field studies, and/or literature reviews may be included depending on the nature of the selected project. The student shall present the work through an oral presentation or, where appropriate, in the form of a practical assignment. Assessment is based on aspects such as the introduction to the research question, problem formulation, methodology, data processing, conclusions, use of scientific literature, language and clarity of expression, coherence, rigor, and, in the case of a more practical assignment, the actual execution and presentation of the work.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Approved presentation of the scientific project.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
