Course description
Do you work with or do you have a great interest in potted plants? Do you want to deepen or broaden your knowledge?
The the course "Rumsväxter" is for you! The course is an interdisciplinary introduction to potted plants that we grow in an indoor environment (i.e. room plants) and cover everything from their care and use to their cultural significance and market. It is aimed at you who want to work with houseplants professionally in the future, at you who are professional and want to further your education, and at you who simply want to deepen your interest.
A central part of the course deals with basic care, such as pest control and how we meet the needs of different plants to get a successful result. On the course you will learn a large number of plants with a focus on identification and name learning. Knowing the name of a plant works as a key and allows you to search for more knowledge about it! The course will also address how we humans have used, how we use and how we could use room plants from a design perspective, a social perspective and a health perspective. We will also take a closer look at what the production and market for houseplants looks like nationally and internationally.
The course is distance and is made up of web-based modules. The modules contain recorded lectures, course literature and assignments so that you can study in a flexible way where and when you want during the course.

Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge of indoor plants with the purpose of being able to advise on plant selection, use and management. The course is aimed at those who want to deepen their knowledge of the field, for example those who want to work with indoor plants professionally or professionals who want to train.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to: • identify a base assortment of indoor plants, • identify common pests and diseases on indoor plants and recommend appropriate measures, • briefly describe climatic factors that affect indoor plants, how these factors can be modified, and how the factors affect plant selection, • briefly describe the use of indoor plants historically and today, • briefly describe the market, production and trade routes for indoor plants.
Content
During the course, the student learns to identify a base assortment of plants for indoor environment, and the names of these plants. Being able to know the name of a plant makes it possible to seek more knowledge about it. The course also deals with basic management such as controlling pests and how the needs of the plants can be met. By understanding the variation in requisite among plats, the ability to choose the right plant based on situation is practiced. The course also includes knowledge of the present and potential use of indoor plants from a design perspective, a social perspective and a health perspective.
The course is a distance course and is made up of web-based modules and digital meetings. The modules contain recorded lectures, course literature, exercises and tasks.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Approved assignments and mandatory elements.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
