Entry Requirements
Knowledge corresponding to at least 90 credits in veterinary nursing, of which knowledge of anaesthesiology and perioperative nursing hygiene corresponding to 15 credits.
Objectives
The purpose of the course is to give the student enhanced knowledge in specific nursing in anaesthesia care for horses, dogs, cats and exotic pets.
After completing the course, the
- describe, identify deviations and propose and justify anaesthesiological nursing care of neonatal, young and older animals, as well as animals with special needs
- describe different administration methods for drugs and infusions perioperatively
- propose, describe and justify perioperative nursing care, including monitoring and pain assessment of animals with an increased risk from anaesthesia
- describe the function and care of and justify the need for advanced technical medical equipment
- describe the insertion and care of catheters in veins and arteries,
- describe blood sampling and further processing for blood gas analysis in anaesthesia, as well as being able to make a preliminary interpretation of the blood test results,
- describe the detection of and propose and justify the handling of perioperative complications, as well as being able to apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- apply regulations and safety rules in the area.

Content
Anaesthesia, including preforming anaesthesia, anaesthesia monitoring and perianaesthetic care is taught by means of lectures, problem-based teaching and compulsory elements such as seminars, practical exercises and demonstrations on models and/or live animals. Various anaesthetic strategies for illnesses in horses, dogs, cats and exotic small animals are described in the course. The students practise scientific attitudes to veterinary nursing.

Teaching will primarily be in Swedish, but some lectures and course literature are in English.

The entry requirement for the course is fulfilled by a two-year veterinary nurse course.
The entry requirement for knowledge of anaesthesiology and perioperative nursing hygiene corresponding to 15 credits is fulfilled by passing course DO0085 or DO0105 or DO0114, Anaesthesiology and perioperative hygiene in veterinary nursing, or the three courses DO0065 Nursing hygiene 1, DO0069 Nursing hygiene 2 and DO0068 Anaesthesiology 1.
