Studio - Landscape architecture for sustainable urban design
Course description
The main focus in the course is on contemporary sustainable urban design development on a neighborhood level. The studio project work is organized as teamwork. Tutoring, lectures and seminars support the project work. Sustainable development is explored and evaluated for different urban morphological characters. Emphasis is on the green and blue structures in relation to built structures, street networks and public meeting places. Methods to gather site-specific knowledge include drawing by hand as a powerful analyzing tool. The project develops skills in finding solutions for combinations of esthetic, technical, functional for sustainable urban design. Presenting of ideas uses a combination of digital tools and drawings by hand.
The course includes methods to evaluate of sustainability parameters and work with the legal urban design process of environmental assessment. The template for the project report follow a scientific structure that help the teamwork to agree on solutions that rely on theory and findings. The structure also allows discussion on alternatives as reflections on the project proposal. An individual final exam summarizes the most important sustainable urban design theory discussed on lectures and seminars.

Objectives
The purpose of this course is for the student to gain in depth knowledge of urban design and development from a landscape architecture perspective, directed towards long-term sustainability. Emphasis is on urban blue-green structures, built structures and cultural environments including a range of aspects related to social sustainability.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to
- define, describe and critically reflect on sustainable urban design and development across various morphological characteristics and from multiple perspectives.
- be familiar with contemporary terminology and debates about sustainable urban design and development.
- find and apply methods relevant to landscape architecture and urban design for analysis of the urban landscape.
- in a project group develop, design and motivate a proposal for sustainable development of a neighbourhood, city district or a small town in the form of an elaborated vision or program that includes relevant structures and illustrates main design principles.
- present the result of the project work in a pedagogic manner.

This course is about sustainable urban design and development on a neighbourhood level. Emphasis is on the green and blue structures in relation to built structures, street networks and cultural environments including various social aspects. The concept of sustainability is examined, assessed, and considered from multiple perspectives. Diverse urban challenges arising from various morphological characteristics are addressed within a sustainability framework. The goal is a proposal for renewal of a city district or small town in a long-term sustainable direction, based on theoretical as well as place-based knowledge. Methods for gathering site-specific knowledge about the environment, its inhabitants and their use of the area are explored and discussed. The studio project develops skills in identifying and presenting solutions that integrates aesthetic and functional conditions in a sustainability context. The project work is organized as teamwork. Tutoring, lectures and seminars support the project work.
