Objectives
The purpose of the course is to give the student basic knowledge and skills in designing a public place, as well as plant knowledge with a focus on spring and summer aspects.
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- in a design, show a general understanding of people's needs and interests in connection with being in a public outdoor environment,
- in a design, show an understanding of the importance of plants for the spatial design,
- identify a selection of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants with a focus on spring and early summer aspects,
- provide an overview of the structure and growth of plants.
Competence and skills
- with guidance portray the main characters of a place,
- show an understanding of the plants' needs and area of use by incorporating a selection of these into a site design,
- argue for proposed changes supported by an analysis of the site and its conditions,
- present design proposals with good legibility visually and in text,
- with guidance, illustrate how the vegetation of a design proposal changes over time.
- with supervision, practically carry out care measures with a focus on pruning in different types of plantings.
Content
The course contains a larger mandatory design assignment where the task is to design a public place. Shorter sketching exercises are included as support for the main task. The exercise is mainly carried out individually, and takes place with the established sketching method for the landscape architect: try solutions and develop proposals in plans, sections and perspectives with constituent parts such as analysis, use, structure, space, materials, sensory experiences and characters. The student practices producing pictures and presenting his proposals orally, visually and in text.
The course includes plant walks and own studies outdoors, where the emphasis is on the nature of the plants as well as their use and importance in landscape architecture. Learning new plants is interspersed with own repetition of trees and bushes from previous courses. The structure and growth of the plants is introduced in connection with practical outdoor exercises. Plant knowledge is applied in the course's design tasks, where plant selection and the ability to put plant characters into words are practiced. Examination of plant identification, carried out outdoors.
The following elements are mandatory: Seminars, presentations, and maintenance exercises.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
