Grading Scale
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.
Course language
Swedish
Entry Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to 45 credits in landscape architecture.
Objectives
The aim of the course is to give an understanding of the construction of ground work and how different site conditions influence the composition of new ground structures. The course also aims to introduce students to methods and tools for transforming design ideas into buildable digital plans.
Knowledge and understanding
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- describe how the geotechnical properties of the ground affect foundations and constructability;
- explain how grading can be expressed at a systematic level and in site construction plans;
- explain the purpose and content of a site construction plan
- describe common structural build-ups of planting beds and hard surfaces.
Skills and abilities
After completing the course, the student should, with supervision, be able to:
- produce a site construction plan based on a design proposal;
- develop a grading strategy based on contour lines, taking into account drainage, accessibility, and design;
- translate grading strategies into buildable plans (site construction plan);
- draw selected examples of common structural build-ups for planting beds and hard surfaces;
- draw a cross section of a landscape construction down to the excavation level, considering grounds characteristics and design loads;
- produce digital 2D models and drawings.
Content
Students gain a basic understanding of the plans that has to be produced in order to build a landscape project. Through supervised studio exercises, they learn how to produce construction plans for site development projects. Teaching focuses on understanding how the ground is built with consideration of design, materials, functions, and the grounds existing conditions. Knowledge of grading is developed by examining different grading strategies for e.g. roads, streets, and places, with attention to accessibility, drainage, and aesthetic expression.
In a larger individual exercise, supported by supervision in the studio, a completed design proposal is translated into a computer-drafted site construction plan and cross sections of the constructed ground. At this stage, surface materials, grading, structural build-ups, and potential landscape constructions are determined. The drawings produced by students are reviewed by teachers and discussed in group seminars before final submission.
The course includes an introduction to digital drafting software for producing construction plans. Seminars and field studies are compulsory.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Successful completion of the course requires approved exercises and participation in compulsory course components.
