Objectives
In the summer course in Agrarian History you learn to understand how the landscape has been influenced by agrciutlure, by farmers work and the grazing of farm animals, and how and why land use has chaged through history.
Upon completion of the course, the students shall be able to:
- Account for the overall development of agriculture in Sweden
- Account for general principles of the spatial organisation of the agrarian landscape, and how and why this has changed over time
- Identify and interpret relics of agrarian history in the landscape
- Account for characteristic features of the biological content of the agrarian landscape
- Account for various methods of cultivation over time
Content
The course includes lectures, field excursions and practical exercises. Individual tasks during not scheduled weeks.
In the summer course in Agrarian History you learn to understand how the landscape has been influenced by agrciutlure, by farmers work and the grazing of farm animals, and how and why land use has chaged through history. The course includes also an overview of Swedish agrarian history with regard to traditional animal husbandry, cultivation and technologies, and basic terminology of the field. During field excursions we are identifying and discussing indicators of various relics of different times, still visible in the rural landscape, as well as biotopes and vegetation favoured by and related to agricultural cultivation, and impact of fertilizing.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Examination is partly accomplished in field, but also through project work and take home examination. Good attendance rate at lectures and excercises in a prerequisite to manage the examination.
