Grading Scale
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.
Course language
Swedish
Entry Requirements
60 credits in biology of which 7,5 credits ecology
Objectives
The course will give the students knowledge about theory and practice in conservation biology necessary for a future professional work with issues related to nature conservation and biodiversity.
After completed course, the student should be able to:
- Explain and discuss basic concepts in theory and practice of conservation biology.
- Discuss different aims of nature conservation and potential conflicts between conservation and other societal interests.
- Understand historical and biological processes that have formed the current biological diversity
- Identify biotopes of importance for nature conservation
- Review different options to manage biotopes of high conservation value, and analyze the relevance of different management options on specific sites.
- Review important legal and policy instruments in society’s work towards preserving biological diversity
- Plan and conduct surveys and monitoring of certain species or groups of species.
- Exemplify how authorities and other organizations work with nature conservation in practice
Content
The course contains lectures, excursions, practical exercises, seminars and projects. Excursions to different biotopes and conservation sites is an important part of the course, as are the projects where the students get to apply their theoretical knowledge. The projects are mandatory.
The course gives the student the necessary knowledge for a future career in the conservation sector, and therefore combines theoretical and practical elements.
The course contains basic theory and concepts in conservation biology, biodiversity-oriented management of specific habitat types, biodiversity conservation in both protected areas (e.g. nature reserves) and in the production landscape, and methods for surveying and monitoring of biodiversity.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Passed written exam, approved oral and written presentation of the project and approved hand-in assignments.
