Grading Scale
The grade requirements within the course grading system are set out in specific criteria. These criteria must be available by the course start at the latest.
Course language
English
Entry Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to 120 credits, of which at least 45 credits in Biology or 45 credits in Horticultural Science or 45 credits in Technology, and English 6.
Objectives
On completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- analyse factors affecting micropropagation and perform plant tissue culture independently
- apply various genetic transformation methods including genome editing and other common molecular techniques used in plant molecular biology
- independently design a research project using different biotechnological and molecular approaches.
Content
The course comprises:
- theory of plant tissue culture, in particular in vitro shoot and root culture, genetic transformation, genome editing, gene cloning and other modern molecular biological methods
- an update of the current global situation with genetically modified crops
- establishment of new in vitro plant cultures, including both meristem and node culture and in vitro rooting, genetic transformation via Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer, DNA-isolation, PCR and analyses of gene expression by qRT-PCR
- case studies with focus on specific problems related to plant breeding, e.g. plant domestication, rooting, plant resilience and product quality for agricultural and horticultural crops.
Scheduled laboratory practices, seminars and study visits are compulsory.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
The examination consists of written and oral presentation of reports. To pass the course, approved participation in all obligatory course components, approved reports and approved oral presentations are required.
