Entry Requirements
Courses corresponding to 90 credits within the Landscape Engineer, Landscape Architect, Horticultural Management or Horticulture programmes, including a minimum of 45 credits within landscape architecture, biology or horticultural science.
Objectives
The central purpose of the course is to further knowledge and skills regarding the demands of trees on their living environment and their maintenance requirements, and practical execution of such maintenance with the emphasis on urban conditions.
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- account for tree’s structure and understand important physiological functions
- understand the possibilities and limitations that is for care of trees from economic social and ecological perspective (triangle of sustainability).
- diagnose tree’s need of care as well as justify and suggest appropriate nursing efforts based on the triangle of sustainability
- critically analyse different problem situations concerning both tree establishment and development of the existing tree population in different habitats
- implement and justify cropping of trees.
Content
Through lectures and literature studies, the foundations will be laid for more applied knowledge e.g. of the physiological functions and structure of trees. Fundamental knowledge of the varying growing site conditions of the city and of plant material suitable for these will also be imparted. Importance is attached to links in the course to the international research frontier within the subject area.
Exercises, seminars, examinations and excursions are mandatory.

Pass in exam. Approved submissions and reporting of assignment components. Participation in compulsory components.

Other Information
To be able to obtain the information in this course in a satisfying way, it is of great importance that the student has a good knowledge of the land and building the terms used in underground construction. This includes understanding of how roads are built, the plant beds are constructed and how different grain size fractions affect the stability of the soil. In cases where the student’s education does not contain these elements, the student should have acquired this knowledge before the course starts.
