Objectives

The course aims to give a basic understanding of the outdoor environment as a resource in a healthcare context. The course partly builds upon knowledge on design and content of outdoor environments, partly on knowledge on preferences and needs of different user groups in relation to experience and use of the outdoors. The course includes theoretical as well as practical tasks.

After completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• describe concepts, models and theories relevant to gardens in healthcare
• give examples of content and use of gardens in healthcare
• compile relevant knowledge on content, design and use of the outdoors for different user groups
• conduct analyses of content and design of healthcare gardens in relation to experience and use for different user groups
• communicate practical and theoretical knowledge of the field to professionals and laymen

Content

The course is composed of three parts. The first part consists of an overview of basic concepts and literature relating to healthcare gardens. Senses, perception, preferences and experiences relating to healthcare gardens are central and so too are the concepts environmental psychology, universal design, healthcare gardens and garden therapy. In the second part the students compile knowledge on different target groups’ needs in the outdoor environment, for example children, older persons, ill or disabled individuals. The students conduct literature reviews on the special needs, behaviours and properties that characterise different target groups. In the third part, the knowledge from the literature reviews are used to draw conclusions about different target groups’ interaction with outdoor environment. Possibilities to experience and use outdoor environments are discussed in relation to the different target groups’ in health care settings. The course contains lectures, workshops, practical assignments (compulsory), seminars (compulsory) and study visits (compulsory).

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course

-Attendance and active participation in compulsory components -Passed written practical assignments including critical review and oral presentation

•  If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
