Objectives
The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge in technology, climatology, hydrology and soil science in horticultural production processes. Mass and energy flows are central. On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- describe and analyse, with the help of basic concepts from physics, chemistry and mechanics, the most important processes in horticultural production and its technical systems
- measure, calculate and appraise various processes and phenomena within horticulture
- describe in general basic hydrological and climatological concepts of importance for horticulture
- explain the importance of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of soil types and growth substrates for plant development
- demonstrate knowledge of basic biological cycles in soils and substrates, describe their application from a horticultural and environmental perspective.
Content
The course consists of following sections:
- Mass and energy flows and energy concepts, described from a physical, chemical and biological perspective.
- Soil and substrate concepts, described from a physical, chemical and biological perspective.
- Basic hydrological and climatological concepts.
- Manipulation of plant growth and development with the help of external growth factors.
- Use of growth substrate and fertilisers in horticulture.
- Study trips and demonstrations will be used to exemplify theoretical components of the course.
Scheduled laboratory work, demonstrations, group discussions, presentations and excursions are mandatory.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
The examination will consist of assignments plus written and/or oral examinations. A passed grade requires passed examinations and assignments, plus participation in study trips, exercises, laboratory practicals and seminars.
- If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
- The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
- If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
- For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
