Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with greater knowledge of plants and planting sites within the horticultural area. The focus is on shrubs and perennials for private and public outdoor areas.

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

• identify a wider assortment of plants
• Analyze the relationship between plant use and development for selected parts of the extended plant assortment based on theories of location, hardiness, succession, competition and natural distribution

Content

The main focus is on plant material in addition to the basic assortment of commercially available horticultural plants, with areas of application in the garden, park, city or landscape, in private and public environments. The course deepens knowledge acquired in previous plant courses by, among other things, building on theories of location, competition, succession, plant geography and biodiversity. In addition to identification of plant material, great emphasis is placed on the system- and site-suitability of these plants. The plant material is studied from a use-related perspective but also in a plant geographical and climatological context. Through studies of different site conditions, students will receive training in selecting suitable plant materials for the actual situation. In addition to students being presented with literature and sources of information to increase their personal critical abilities, they will also be given the opportunity to make contact with a number of specialists within the horticultural area.

Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course

The examination consists for written examinationa, exercises and compulsory parts of the course. To pass the course, approved result in written exam and exercises and participation in compulsory components is required.

•  If a student has failed an examination, the examiner has the right to issue supplementary assignments. This applies if it is possible and there are grounds to do so.
• The examiner can provide an adapted assessment to students entitled to study support for students with disabilities following a decision by the university. Examiners may also issue an adapted examination or provide an alternative way for the students to take the exam.
• If this syllabus is withdrawn, SLU may introduce transitional provisions for examining students admitted based on this syllabus and who have not yet passed the course.
• For the assessment of an independent project (degree project), the examiner may also allow a student to add supplemental information after the deadline for submission. Read more in the Education Planning and Administration Handbook.
