Entry Requirements
45 credits Veterinary nursing, of which 3 credits in Microbiology.
Objectives
The purpose of the course is to give students qualified knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPC) procedures.
After completing the course, students shall be able to:
- describe principles for infection prevention and control that is intended to prevent and manage healthcare associated infections
- describe the handling of hazardous waste in a sustainable manner,
- apply practical skills infection prevention and control procedures
- describe methods for cleaning, disinfection, sterilisation and maintenance of instruments and equipment in animal healthcare
- evaluate IPC plans based on current regulations,
- describe the basics of interaction between animals and people in an animal healthcare context.
Content
Principles for handling hazardous waste, hygiene work, evaluation of IPC plans and hygiene procedures relating to personnel, patients and equipment are taught by means of lectures, problem-based teaching and compulsory seminars. The sustainability perspective is a central element of the course. An ethological and anthrozoological approach to animal healthcare, focusing on the sick animal’s behaviour and needs is taught through lectures and a compulsory seminar. By means of demonstrations and practical exercises, some of which involve dummies and/or live animals, students are trained in the following: clipping, aseptic preparation of surgical sites, surgical hand washing and disinfection, gowning and gloving, and cleaning and disinfection of equipment in animal healthcare.

Approved written and oral examination, approved practical examination and approved participation in compulsory elements.
