Entry Requirements
30 credits veterinary nursing, 3 credits microbiology.
Objectives
The purpose of the course is to give students qualified knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPC) procedures.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to
- describe principles for infection prevention and control that is intended to prevent and manage healthcare associated infections,
- describe the handling of hazardous waste in a sustainable manner,
- apply practical skills infection prevention and control procedures,
- describe methods for cleaning, disinfection, sterilisation and maintenance of instruments and equipment in animal healthcare,
- evaluate IPC plans based on current regulations,
- describe the basics of interaction between animals and people in an animal healthcare context.
Content
Subject-related content
Principles for handling hazardous waste, hygiene work, evaluation of IPC plans and hygiene routines regarding personnel, patients and equipment are taught in the course.
The sustainability perspective is a central element of the course. An ethological and anthrozoological approach to animal healthcare, focusing on the sick animal’s behaviour and needs. Some practical exercises involve dummies and/or live animals students are trained in the following: aseptic preparation of surgical sites, surgical hand washing and -disinfection, gowning and gloving, and cleaning and disinfection of equipment in animal healthcare.
Teaching formats
To further student learning and promote discussion, a variety of methods are used:
Lectures, problem-based teaching, seminars, demonstrations and practical exercises.
The course focuses on the following generic competencies:
Written and oral communication, information competence, group dynamics/teamwork, self-development and critical thinking.
The following components are compulsory:
Seminars, exercises and presentations.

Passed written and oral examination, passed practical examination and approved participation in compulsory components.
