Objectives
The course covers vertebrate systematics, evolutionary history, ecology and main characters related to their occurrence and way of life. The course also provides basic species knowledge of Swedish vertebrates.
After completing the course the student should be able to:
- briefly describe vertebrate systematics, ecology, biogeography, morphology, physiology and reproductive biology and briefly discuss their interrelationships.
- identify and describe common mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish in Swedish ecosystems with examples of their distribution, behavior, adaptation to the environment and reproductive strategies.
Content
Lectures cover vertebrate evolutionary history, the prevailing view of their evolutionary relationships as well as their main characteristics related to their occurrence and way of life.
Lectures will also cover factors that control and controlled animal distribution, and species identifying technics, including interpretation of animal tracks. The course also includes exercises in identifying species, skeletal parts, feathers, eggs, tracks, etc.
