Transfering credits from previous courses
Here you will find information about credit transfer at SLU and how to submit an application as a student. Read through the frequently asked questions and answers before applying for credit transfer.
If you have previous studies that correspond to a programme at SLU, you can apply for credit transfer. This means that previous knowledge can replace a specific course or part of a course within the programme, or be credited as optional higher education credits in your degree.
Submit your application for credit transfer in good time, as it can sometimes take a while for applications to be processed.
The rules for credit transfer are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance (in Swedish). To apply, you must be admitted to SLU and already be studying here. A decision on credit transfer applies at the university/college where the decision was made. You will not receive a grade for the credits transferred.
Apply for credit transfer in good time. It can sometimes take a while for your application to be processed, and the processing time can vary during the year depending on how many applications there are and what your particular case involves.
If you have studied at another Swedish university or abroad, you must always apply for credit transfer.

This is how to apply for credit transfer
You apply for credit transfer in Ladok for students.
- The application is received in Ladok and you are given a case number.
- The administrator checks the application.
- The administrator requests any additional information from you.
- The administrator sends a complete application to a subject expert for an opinion.
- The administrator makes a decision based on the subject expert's opinion.
- The decision is registered in Ladok. A notification is sent to the email address you have provided in Ladok. Make sure your information is up to date in Ladok for students.
NOTE: Courses or parts of courses for which credit transfer has been granted will not receive a grade, as no new examination has taken place.
How long does it take to process my application?
You will normally receive a decision on credit transfer within 6-8 weeks. The processing time is calculated from the date your application is complete (please read carefully which documents you need to attach to your application). Apply for credit transfer well in advance of your graduation date. If your application concerns credit transfer for all or part of a course within your programme, apply no later than 8 weeks before the start of the course in order to receive your decision in time for the start of the course.
