Application period
You can apply for exchange studies for the 2027 spring semester during the second application round, from 1 to 16 March 2026. A link to the application portal will be published below during the application period.
Detailed application instructions and information about the application process can be found in the Moveon database when you fill in your application. Please read the instructions before you apply.
To be eligible for exchange studies, you need to fulfil the general entry requirements and, in some cases, specific language requirements depending on the country you wish to study in.
In order to qualify to go on exchange studies at SLU, you need to:
have completed at least one year of full-time study at SLU or be admitted to a Master's programme*;
have passed at least 75% of the courses on which you have registered;
ensure that your exchange studies will count towards your degree at SLU. You must have had your choice of courses abroad approved in advance by your programme director of studies or similar.
*If you are admitted to a Bachelor’s programme but intend to apply for exchange studies during a Master’s programme to which you have not yet been admitted, you may apply to go abroad no earlier than the spring semester of the first year. The recommendation is to go abroad during the second year of a Master’s programme.
SLU students usually cope well studying in English and do not experience any major language difficulties. All exchange students will receive a document from the mobility team that states that their level of English is the minimum equivalent of English 6, which is the basic level of English required for entry into SLU.
Universities in Australia and some universities in the UK require additional proof of English language proficiency. Please see the information in the exchange database to see proof of proficiensy that are accepted.
Are you planning to study in a language other than English?
If you plan to apply for exchange studies taught in a language other than English, you need to include proof of language proficiency with your application.
If you want to study in a country where English is not the main language, keep in mind that courses are often taught in the national language. Many European universities offer more courses in English at the Master’s level and fewer at the Bachelor’s level.
Language courses may be available for exchange students at your host university, sometimes at an additional cost. Consider whether you need to take an extra language course either before you go or during your stay abroad. One good way of practising the language before you go is to socialise with exchange students studying at SLU.
How to apply
You apply in the Moveon database, the link to the application form will appear on this page during the application period.
The application form in Moveon works best in the Mozilla Firefox browser.
Before you start your application, please keep this in mind:
You must use your SLU email address when filling in the form.
Read the instructions in Moveon before starting your application.
In Moveon, you can check the information about the universities you are interested in.
Once you have submitted your application, it cannot be edited or supplemented.
Choose universities and courses
In your application, you can choose up to four different exchange options. It is important that all these options offer courses in your field and at the right level.
The courses you take abroad must be eligible to be credited towards your degree. You are responsible for researching your choice of universities.
For each of your choices, you will be asked to describe some courses you might be interested in taking.
You can browse the partner universities in Moveon. For each university, you can see which subject areas they offer courses in and how many students they accept from SLU.
It is now time to search for relevant courses you would like to take during your exchange studies. The courses you take while you are abroad must be eligible to be credited towards your degree.
Finding course catalogues, course descriptions and academic calendars on foreign university websites can be tricky, but it is also a good way to get to know the universities. Remember that some universities use different terminology than we do at SLU.
To find the information easier, try these tips:
Choose English as the language of the site.
Use the search engine function, using with keywords such as ”exchange studies,” ”international student,” ”prospective student,” ”international office,” ”course catalogue,” ”syllabus,” ”academic calendar,” or ”module” (courses may sometimes be called modules).
It is often sufficient to look at the course offerings from previous or current semesters when selecting courses, as the course lists for upcoming semesters are usually published later, just before the start of the semester.
Communicate with your programme director of studies
Once you have chosen your courses, contact your programme director of studies to discuss your choices and the possibility of crediting them towards your degree when you return.
Plan your courses carefully to ensure you meet the requirements for courses you want to take when you return from your exchange.
Semester dates at foreign universities often differ from those at SLU. This means your exchange period might overlap with the start or end of a semester at SLU.
If that happens, it is your responsibility to sort out any scheduling conflicts - but you do not have to do it alone. A study and career counsellor or your programme director of studies can help you plan your studies and find a solution that works.
Possible ways to manage overlaps
If your exchange starts after the SLU semester begins: You could take a course, or part of one, at SLU before leaving.
If your exchange ends after the next SLU semester starts: You might postpone or skip the first course or module at SLU.
If your host university is flexible about exams: You could take them earlier or complete the course online.
Documents to upload with your application
You need to upload the following documents with your application:
Proof of language proficiency if you plan to study in a language other than English.
If you are applying to a university in the UK, you must also upload proof of English proficiency.
Motivation for studying abroad
When you submit your application, you will be asked to explain why you want to study abroad by answering a few short questions. Write briefly in either Swedish or English, choose the language you feel most comfortable with.
Detailed application instructions
Detailed application instructions and information about the application process can be found in the Moveon database when you fill in your application.
Selection and nomination process
The processing of your application begins immediately after the application deadline. We will contact you if any additional documents or information are required.
The assessment of your application is based entirely on its content — in particular your academic and personal motivation for doing exchange studies. We do not normally consider your course grades, except in the case of a small number of foreign universities that require a specific grade level.
It is also important that the courses you list in your application are included in the agreement that SLU has with the host university, and that the courses can be credited towards your degree at SLU. You should therefore discuss your study plans in advance with your programme director of studies.
Nominations for SLU exchange places are made by SLU's international officers. However, it is always the host university that decides whether you are accepted. In practice, it is very rare for a nominated student not to be accepted.
Once decisions have been made about which students will be nominated for an exchange, all students are informed by email, including those who have not been offered a place.
If you accept the nomination, you will be invited to a meeting where you will receive information on how to proceed with your application to the host university.
Notification of acceptance
You will be notified by email at the end of January or the beginning of February. If you receive an offer for an exchange place, you will have one week to accept or decline it. If you accept, you will be invited to an information meeting with further instructions.
