Take your research further – apply for access to cutting-edge infrastructure through AQUARIUS

Published: 02 June 2025

The second AQUARIUS call opens on 2 September 2025. Researchers in marine and freshwater fields can apply for funded access to advanced infrastructure – from research vessels and labs to monitoring stations and satellite services.

AQUARIUS is a European collaboration that brings together 57 research infrastructures from across the continent. Through the Transnational Access programme, researchers from academia, industry, government agencies, and NGOs can gain free access to these facilities, including travel support and technical assistance. The goal: to support research that contributes to the EU Mission Ocean and Waters and the green transition.

R/V Svea – Part of AQUARIUS

One of Sweden’s contributions to the infrastructure catalogue is the research vessel R/V Svea – purpose-built to enable interdisciplinary marine research.

“Staying at the forefront of science requires access to advanced research environments – which are often costly, especially at sea. Initiatives like AQUARIUS are crucial. They make it possible for more researchers to carry out ambitious projects that might otherwise never happen,” says Lasse Thorell, head of the ship management unit at SLU.

Start Planning Now

The call is open from 2 September to 28 October 2025 – but you can already:

You can apply for large-scale, multi-platform projects – or for smaller, more targeted studies. All projects must address one or more of the challenges defined under the Mission Ocean and Waters.
