Description of the field

Clinical chemistry laboratory diagnostics are used to diagnose diseases and increase our knowledge of the pathogenesis of various diseases. Sub-areas are hematology, endocrinology, clinical chemistry and cytology, and quality assurance/method development/validation of clinical chemical diagnostics. We provide education for both veterinary nursing students (years 1 and 2) and veterinary students (years 4 and 5). Clinical Pathology has an active residency program (European Colleague of Veterinary Clinical Pathology, ECVCP) together with the Clinical Chemical Laboratory at SLU University Animal Hospital.

Current research

Current research focuses on diagnostic methods that are clinically relevant to veterinary medicine. Current research areas are:

  • insulin resistance in cats, dogs and horses
  • diagnostic biomarkers in canine urine samples
  • diagnostic biomarkers in reproductive endocrinology
  • improved quality in laboratory diagnostics

We also have an important function in developing and evaluating new methods, as well as spread knowledge regarding quality assurance in clinical chemical diagnostics.
