Our data

The National Forest Inventory collects comprehensive and detailed data about Sweden's forests. This information provides an important basis for planning, environmental monitoring, and research, and forms the foundation of the official statistics on the state and changes of the forests. Our collected data can be used in a wide range of applications and is freely available.

Microdata for download

The National Forest Inventory primarily provides aggregated statistics, but microdata from our sample plots can be an important resource for research. Below are some datasets available for download, but if you don’t find what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to contact us — we can help you with a customized microdata extraction.

Tree ring data from 161 000 trees with  6.7 million measurements. The data is presented by both growth season and measurement order.
Growth rings

Since the Swedish National Forest Inventory started in 1923 tree ring bore cores have been sampled. This tree ring data has primarily been used to calculate diameter growth as the basis for basal area weighted increment and volume increment. The tree ring data has also been used to calculate the annual ring index and with other increment analyses.

This file contains data from 1995-2023. The data is presented by year (growth season) and by measurement order - to facilitate different types of analyses.

A subset of field data collected on the NFI's temporary sample plots. The data is intended for use as validation data for remote sensing.
Height measurement of sample tree

The data has been prepared as validation data for remote sensing. (Updated with number of canopy layers, indicator for full canopy cover, canopy closure, canopy gaps, and harvesting class.)

Information about the dataset

On the Research Support page, you can read more about the guidelines for using data from the National Forest Inventory.

The data set is comprised of aggregated stand and stem data from the first Swedish National Forest Inventory conducted during the period 1923-1929.
Field inventory crew from 1923

During the first Swedish National Forest Inventory the field inventory was conducted using a 10m wide transects with a continuous survey. The distance between transects was larger in the north of Sweden than the south. The dataset contains aggregated stand and stem data from the first Swedish National Forest Inventory 1923-1929 for 31 385 segments with the majority of segments having a dimension of 10mx2km. This dataset can be used for comparisons with historical sources, to create different types of maps and for creating county level statistics. If you would like to compare the data with current data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory it is important to take into consideration changes in both inventory methods and definitions.
