"I thought I'd become a banker" – Anton's unexpected career switch
During high school in Umeå, Anton Edström studied economics with the goal of working in the finance industry. But something changed when he took part in a UN roleplay at school, where he and a classmate represented Australia in the IPCC’s climate negotiations.
“It was amazing to write and push through a climate resolution. I really felt how fun and meaningful it was to work with climate issues,” says Anton.
This experience led him to explore other options – and eventually he landed on the Forest and Landscape programme at SLU.
“My aunt, who works at SLU in Umeå, recommended the programme. The combination of forestry and landscape design instantly clicked with me, and I decided to apply in the spring of 2023,” Anton explains.
A broad industry full of possibilities
Anton describes the forest sector as a world full of opportunities.
“I had no idea there were so many different paths within forestry. It’s such a broad field with endless career opportunities, and that means I can shape my future just the way I want,” he says.
His dream job is to work with innovation and sustainable processes in the forest industry.
“I want to have a positive impact on the environment while driving innovation. Having a leadership role is also something I aim for in the future,” Anton shares.
An international programme with unique perspectives
One of the things Anton values most about the Forest and Landscape programme is its international focus.
“It’s fantastic to study with people from all over the world. Everyone has different views on forests and how they should be managed. We also learn from international researchers and lecturers,” he says.
He also highlights the breadth of the programme, which combines forestry and landscape design.
“It gives us a unique understanding of forests and how they can be integrated with urban environments. It’s really a programme that prepares us for the future,” says Anton.
Lessons from fieldwork and climate perspectives
Anton appreciates the programme’s practical elements, ranging from analysing soil samples in the field to working in labs and computer rooms to process and present results.
“We gain a holistic view that combines hands-on experience with theoretical knowledge. It prepares us to face real-world challenges in the forestry sector,” he says.
The programme puts strong emphasis on climate adaptation, and Anton feels well-equipped to contribute to a sustainable future.
“We learn how to adapt forestry practices based on both ecological and societal factors – everything from species selection to geographical and structural conditions. It’s a complex but incredibly important part of the education,” he explains.
A meaningful choice
For Anton, studying something he’s truly passionate about is a special feeling.
“It’s rewarding to combine your passion for the environment and nature with your studies and future career. The forest industry is so broad that there’s always room for variation and new challenges,” he says.
With his experience from UN roleplay and a deep commitment to climate issues, Anton looks forward to a future where he can make a real difference – both for the forest and for the world.
