Marielle:This programme is truly unique
Marielle Ottosson from Dalsland has always felt close to nature. As a member of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and passionate about environmental issues, she decided to make a change — starting with studying SLU’s Forest and Landscape program.
“Animals and nature have always been closest to my heart. But as I’ve seen and heard more about nature’s exploitation—both through the media and firsthand—my commitment has grown,” Marielle explains.
From frustration to action
Marielle was long frustrated watching “forest after forest just disappear.” She began searching for education to better understand why Swedish forestry looks the way it does—and how she could contribute to change.
“I was tired of just standing by and watching. When I found Forest and Landscape, I realized this was the right program for me. Traditional forestry studies never really appealed to me, but this program is different,” she says.
The dream: sustainable forestry
Marielle’s goal is clear—she wants to help transform Swedish forestry.
“We face huge challenges with climate change and biodiversity loss. I want to work towards clear-cut free, nature-based methods and the preservation of protected continuous forests. Forests are so much more than just an economic resource; they are part of the entire landscape and our future,” she says.
“It’s amazing to study something I’m passionate about”
Studying something she cares deeply about gives Marielle extra drive.
“It’s fantastic! I feel my motivation to learn more only grows with time. Sometimes it almost feels like time flies,” she laughs.
She highlights that the program offers a unique perspective, viewing forests as part of a larger landscape and embracing an international outlook.
“It’s a broad education showing that forests are much more than just economic value. We need to view forestry from multiple perspectives, and the international perspective is something we really should bring more into Swedish forestry. Here, I get the tools I need to contribute to that change,” she says.
Ready to face future challenges
Regarding climate change, Marielle feels the program has given her a vital insight—the importance of collaboration and facts.
“Forestry’s future needs to be transparent, fact-based, and built on collaboration. This education has given me both the knowledge and perspective to contribute. Forestry is a polarized issue, but I believe we can find solutions together,” she concludes.
