For Vincent Gagnon, a 24-year-old Erasmus exchange student from Canada, studying at SLU’s Euroforester programme was a chance to gain international insight into forestry while gaining valuable hands-on experience.

"I’m studying environmental forestry management, and I want to become a forestry engineer. When choosing my exchange programme, I took recommendations from past students. They said Euroforester was enriching, fun, and full of incredible excursions—so that helped me decide," he says.

Why Sweden?

With six universities to choose from, Vincent selected SLU in Sweden for its advanced forestry sector and similarities to Quebec’s climate and biodiversity. "Sweden has been practicing sustainable forestry for much longer, and I knew I could take that knowledge back home," he explains.

Vincent especially appreciates the strong focus on field excursions in the Euroforester programme. “We regularly head out into the forest to see things firsthand, which makes a huge difference in how you understand forestry,” he says.

A Unique Learning Environment

At SLU, Vincent appreciates the structured learning approach. Rather than managing multiple subjects at once, students take one course at a time, allowing for deeper focus.

The diverse mix of teachers and students also enhances the learning experience. "Each course has different teachers, all specialists in their field. And having classmates from various countries brings fresh perspectives you wouldn’t get otherwise."

A Supportive and Welcoming Community

Beyond academics, Vincent has enjoyed the tight-knit community at the programme. "The Euroforester programme feels like a big community where you make lifelong bonds. Even the teachers are engaged and approachable."

Exchange students receive strong support, with staff assisting with housing, onboarding, and administration. Adjusting to life in Sweden was easier than expected, and despite Sweden’s reserved reputation, Vincent found the people warm and welcoming. "Once you get to know them, they’re incredibly friendly."
