Associate Senior Lecturer/Assistant Professor* in One Health and One Welfare with focus on resilient food production

This position as an associate senior lecturer will be located at the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare. At the department, our goal is to promote good animal husbandry and animal welfare, as well as sustainable food production with high product quality through research and education about animals, focusing on feed and nutrition, care and environment, ethology and animal ethics, animal welfare, and animal protection.

Subject description

This position is based in animal science and veterinary medicine, but is multidisciplinary, being directed towards One Health and One Welfare in the context of resilient food production. The aim is to investigate how animal welfare interacts with animal housing, crop production and overall economic resilience - at the system level.

Duties 

This is a fixed-term appointment (4 years) as regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance. The role of associate senior lecturer is a career-development position that is the first step on the academic career path at SLU. 

The associate senior lecturer must develop an individual research profile within their subject. Research is expected to take place in collaboration with researchers both at the department and throughout the university. National and international collaborations are also expected. During their employment, an associate senior lecturer is entitled to apply for an evaluation review for promotion to senior lecturer. They will be assessed based on the criteria that are established when advertising the position of associate senior lecturer.

In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to

  • compete for external research funding and publish scientific articles;
  • act as an assistant supervisor for doctoral students;
  • plan, develop, teach and examine theoretical and practical components at first, second and third cycle levels;
  • participate in the required training in teaching and learning in higher education;
  • collaborate and communicate with relevant players in the community;

The department uses Swedish and English in parallel. The associate senior lecturer should be able to perform the majority of their tasks in English. As a public authority, the university has Swedish as its main language according to the requirements of the Language Act and the associate senior lecturer must be able to use Swedish as their working language within four years of beginning the position. The department will provide support with language learning.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position as associate senior lecturer, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree or hold the equivalent academic expertise. Primary consideration should be given to someone who has been awarded a doctoral degree, or fulfils the eligibility requirement within seven years of the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer.

The applicant must

  • demonstrate scientific competence in the subject for the appointment;
  • have good knowledge of English;

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as associate senior lecturer must be the degree of expertise required as qualification for employment.

Additionally, the following are to be assessed:

  • The ability to develop an independent research profile within the subject for the appointment.
  • The applicant has what is needed to meet the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer as part of the career-development position.

The appointment will be offered to the applicant who, following a qualitative comprehensive assessment, is in the best position to conduct and develop the duties in question, and contribute to the positive development of the organisation.

* Swedish “biträdande universitetslektor”, a tenured position approximately equivalent to Associate senior lecturer (UK) or Assistant professor (US). The applicant who is offered this employment at SLU will be employed as Associate senior lecturer.
