Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in landscape architecture with a focus on aesthetic qualities and design of vegetation

The Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management at SLU Alnarp works with research and education. We work with issues related to the planning, design and management of landscapes across all categories and levels of scale. The department is part of the multi-sensoric lab SLU Sensola, in cooperation with the Department of People and Environment. The Senior Lecturer will be placed in the subject group Urban Vegetation which carries out socially relevant research and teaching in the fields of design, construction and management of vegetation, primarily in an urban context. Subject area

The subject covers aesthetic qualities and the design of vegetation with a focus on multi-sensoric perception and preference of designed vegetation systems.

Duties

Within the subject area the senior lecturer should

  • develop, lead and conduct research-based teaching at all levels of the educational cycle
  • supervise students at all levels of the education cycle
  • continuously develop oneself as a teacher and develop pedagogical leadership
  • plan, lead and implement high quality research
  • publish scientific articles
  • develop and carry out research in collaboration with SLU Sensola
  • develop and maintain national and international networks with researchers, industry, organizations and authorities
  • communicate about research and research results and contribute knowledge to society
  • be able to teach in Swedish or another Scandinavian language

Qualifications

Within the subject of the employment the applicant shall:

  • have completed a doctoral degree within Landscape Architecture or have equivalent scientific competence
  • have demonstrated pedagogical skill and proficiency in teaching at undergraduate and advanced level, including the supervision of students at university level
  • have completed university pedagogical education or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge
  • have demonstrated the ability to obtain external research grants
  • have good knowledge of Swedish or other Scandinavian language
  • have good knowledge of English

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for employment shall primarily apply to the degree of such skill which is a requirement for eligibility for employment.

The assessment of teaching expertise will take into account the following:

  • planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of own teaching
  • supervision and examination at all levels of the education cycle
  • the ability to integrate research and a scientific approach into the pedagogical work
  • pedagogical vision

The assessment of research expertise will take into account the following:

  • completed research efforts and ongoing research
  • the ability to independently initiate and conduct outstanding and innovative research
  • external research funds awarded in competition

Furthermore, expertise in the following will be taken into account:

  • developing and leading both activities and personnel within the academy/university
  • communication and collaboration
  • collaboration with external stakeholders and the surrounding community
  • the ability to inform/communicate about research and development work

Specific competence in aesthetic qualities and design of vegetation with relevance to the overall subject Urban Vegetation is particularly meritorious. Research expertise and particularly in-depth knowledge and experience of research regarding aesthetics, design, perception and preference of different designed vegetation systems is also meritorious. Experience in different types of qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis, such as the use of surveys, interviews as well as experience of physiological measurements in relation to nature exposure is also meritorious.

When assessing the candidate’s qualifications, equal attention will be given to teaching and research expertise respectively.

The position will be offered to the candidate who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is assessed to have the best qualifications to carry out and develop current tasks and contribute to a positive development of the department and SLU.
