Connecting the global south and north

The South Africa-Sweden University Forum (SASUF) is a strategic internationalisation project running from 2017-2020 aiming to strengthen ties between Sweden and South Africa in research, education and innovation. SASUF is a collaboration between 37 universities together with embassies, civil society organisations, funding agencies & ministries in both countries.

One of the panels builds on a webinar co-organized by SIANI in May this year entitled “Deagrarianisation: underlying reasons and effects across contexts in South Africa and Europe”. During that webinar and associated longer recorded lectures we discussed deagrarianisation across contexts in South Africa and Europe. In preparation for the workshop participants are encouraged to watch the recorded deagrarianisation webinar and selected longer lectures of interest found here.

On November 25, 2020 (14.30-16.00 CET), Klara Fischer  will host this panel and bring forward the discussion with researchers from South Africa and Sweden about the trend of deagrarianisation in South Africa’s former homelands and what this means for environment and livelihoods in the face of climate change. The discussion is introduced and led by Professor Sheona Shackleton (UCT). Panelists include: Flora Hajdu (SLU), David Neves (Independent researcher), Charlie Shackleton (Rhodes University) and Klara Fischer (SLU).
