From management of semi-natural grasslands to spatial allocation of protected areas

Malin Tälle is a postdoc interested in conservation biology, mainly focusing on forests and agricultural landscapes. She has a particular interest in evidence-based conservation, where conclusions from previous studies aid decision making and help guide conservation efforts.

Semi-natural grasslands are valuable habitats in the agricultural landscape as they may contain a high diversity of both plant and animal species, as well as contribute to essential ecosystem services such as pollination.

To keep these habitats open and maintain the biodiversity in them, management like grazing or mowing is necessary. As limited resources are
available for management and restoration of semi-natural grasslands, research is needed to find the best available management method that maintains biodiversity at a low cost.

In her Tamm lecture Malin Tälle will present the conclusions from her previous research comparing effects of grazing, mowing, burning, different mowing techniques and mowing frequencies, on the flora and fauna of semi-natural grasslands, and the management implications this has for the preservation of biodiversity.



I will also tell you about my current research here at SLU, which is focused on
a systematic review of studies related to the spatial allocation of protected
areas in the landscape.
