The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launches a new online tool that will help countries, practitioners and technicians better understand and manage water resources and services from forests. The launch event takes place on 28 Jan 2021, 15:00-16:00 CET (registration link below) featuring a demo of how the FL-WES tool works.
The event will be moderated by Ms Lotta Samuelson, Programme Manager at the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and will include remarks by Ms Mette Wilkie, Director of the Forestry Division at FAO. There will be a presentation from the Swedish Forest Agency and special messages from the partners at SIWI and WeForest who participated in the development of the Forest-Water Monitoring framework, the backbone of the FL-WES tool.
The Forest and Landscape Water Ecosystem Services (FL-WES) Tool is a decision-support tool for monitoring forest-water relationships, from measuring the quantity and quality of water resources from forests to the impacts of managing forests for water.
Forests play a vital role in the water cycle and provide nature-based solutions for water and disaster risk management. Understanding forest-water relationships is important to address food and water security, as well as mitigating risks to water-related natural hazards, contributing to more resilient food systems, communities and landscapes.
It provides guidance on what and how to monitor, taking into account local contexts, including environmental parameters, different land-uses and management objectives and available human and financial resources. The FL-WES tool has a database of around 140 methodologies (and counting) that can be tailored to user needs.
FL-WES can be easily integrated with project planning, as well as monitoring and evaluation systems.
The objective is to make monitoring accessible and enjoyable. Ultimately, the tool facilitates an improved understanding of forest-water relationships in order to inform practices and policies.
