Thematic PhD course in silviculture: Climate, forest and people, 3 ECTS

In this course, we will read, write and discuss the challenges in silviculture for the future, with specific considerations on adaptations to climate change.

We will use German forestry as a case study and the major part of the course is a 9-day excursion where we will visit German forests and meet researchers from Freiburg University. The excursion is arranged by Future Forests and on the same trip there will be senior and junior researchers together with forest owners and forestry practitioners.

Subjects for the course are
• Climate change adaptation in forestry & forest resilience
• Closer-to-nature forestry & Close-to-nature forestry (Naturnah Forstwirtschaft)
• Integrated, multiple-use forestry in practice
• Biodiversity implications and societal interactions related to climate change adaptations in forestry

We will have a limited number of seats for PhD students, so early registration is recommended. We will prioritize Future forests affiliated organisations (SLU, Skogforsk and Umeå University) but 50 % of the PhD students have to be affiliated to the Faculty of Forest Sciences, SLU. PhD students from other universities are also welcome to apply.

Course schedule

20 September: Online introduction on reading and writing and introduction to assignment 1

28- September-6 October: Excursion week, mandatory

18 October: Deadline Assignment 2

To pass the course it is required to submit Assignment 1 (presentation on your PhD work linked to the course subjects), Assignment 2 (Essay with reflections on the course content) and to participate in the excursion week. More information will come after registration.

Costs

The PhD students need to cover half of the excursion fee, the rest will be covered by Future Forests. The cost for bus, meals and hotels (shared bedrooms 2 students in each) are covered by the fee.
