Marina Solé

Marina Solé Berga
Researcher at the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics.

I work as animal geneticist studying complex traits with health and welfare implications. I am from Spain and I move to Uppsala to continue my scientific career and gain more experience with the team of Gabriella Lindgren.

I am assisting in the genetic section of graduate courses in Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine at SLU. In addition, I give seminars on the master course in the genetic section in Agronomy at the University of Sevilla (Spain). I ususally supervise graduate/undergraduate students and host intership students.

My current career focuses on the study of the genetic basis that regulate behaviour and locomotion patterns critical for athletic performance, using the horse as a model organism. My research involves using traditional genetic methods in combination with genomic, molecular genetics and computational tools to investigate genetic variants and their phenotypic effect. I expect that the results will have favorable impact on horses' health and welfare. I am involved in different horse projects:

Bachelor degree (Bs) in Biology, UB, Spain, 2007

Master of Science (MSc) in Animal Breeding and Reproduction Biotechnology, IAMZ-UPV-UAB, Spain, 2009.

PhD in Equine Breeding and Conservation Genetics, “Phenotypic and genetic characterization of morpho-functional traits in purebred Menorca horses: development of new strategies for use in its conservation and breeding program”. Department of Genetics, UCO, Spain, 2013.

Previous appointments and Postdoc periods:

  • April 2016-February 2018: Post-Doctoral researcher at the Unit of Animal Genomics (GIGA-Medical Genomics), ULg, Belgium.
  • July 2013-March 2016: Post-Doctoral researcher at the Meragem research group (PAI AGR-158 & PAI AGR-272), UCO-US, Spain.
  • September 2009-June 2013: PhD student at Department of Genetics, UCO, Spain.
  • September 2008-July 2009: Master student at the Unit of Animal Breeding and Genetics, IRTA, Spain.

Other relevant merits and awards:

  • Member of the “International Society for Animal Genetics” (ISAG) since 2018.
  • Member of the “Sociedad Española de Equinotecnia” (SEDE) since 2015.
  • Teaching Assistantship (Honorary collaborator), 2012 -2015, University of Córdoba, Spain.
  • Accredited Assistant Professor since 2014, by the Spanish Academic Staff Recruitment Assessment Programme (PEP) set up by ANECA.
  • Bursary fellowship award: 63th Annual Meeting of the EAAP Conference, 2012.
  • Travel bursary recipient for PhD Students: Agrifood Campus of International Excellence ceiA3, 2012.

I was co-supervisor for Sara Negro, who defended her thesis on July 27, 2017. Project title: Genetic improvement of trotting ability: detection of SNPs genes related to sport performance and behaviour for the implementation of selection assisted by markers on the Spanish trotting horse. Entity: Universidad de Córdoba, Spain.
