Safety and quality of food was discussed in China

Published: 03 October 2018

The meeting of ISO/TC34/SC6 “Meat, poultry, fish, eggs and their products” was held from 11 to 14 September 2018, in Nanjing, China and brought together the experts from 9 countries. Sweden was represented by Associate Professor Galia Zamaratskaia from the Department of Molecular Sciences.

Dialogue between international organisations involved in standard method development, optimization and validation is a necessity if we want to ensure safety and good quality of animal food products. In recent years, the ISO has published standards of methods applicable to meat and meat products. Some of these methods need revision.

- We at SLU have strong competencies in both meat science and analytical chemistry, and everyone will benefit if we are involved in standards development work, says Galia Zamaratskaia.

After the meeting, Galia Zamaratskaia visited Nanjing Agricultural University and gave a lecture on factors affecting pork quality. The host was Professor Chunbao Li, who worked as a postdoc at the Department of Food Science (currently the Department of Molecular Sciences) on meat quality and now conducts research on dietary meat effects on human health.
