The EU's Green Deal (EGD) is the sustainability and growth strategy that will permeate the EU's work over the next five years. The EGD covers a wide range of initiatives in different areas. These are summarised in a 'European Green Deal Roadmap'. Two recently published building blocks of the EGD are a biodiversity strategy, and a new food strategy (farm-to-fork). Below are summaries of the initiatives.

As an essential part of the Green Deal, the two strategies will promote economic recovery. From a coronavirus perspective, the aim is for the strategies to strengthen society's resilience to future pandemics, climate impacts, forest fires and food security disruptions. There will also be an updated EU forest strategy in early 2021.

Funding opportunites

Linked to the European Green Deal will be a special call for research funding – ”European Green Deal Call”. It is due to open in September but no exact date has yet been set. This is one of the last calls from the EU's Horizon 2020 framework programme, which will end in 2020.
