Record-Breaking Year: SLU’s Forest and Landscape Programme Up 88%
SLU’s bachelor’s programme Forest and Landscape shows the biggest increase of all SLU programmes in 2025 – with an 88% increase in admissions compared to the previous year.
Behind this success lies a new communications effort, a dedicated team, and a programme content that reflects the major challenges of our time.
“Young people are increasingly looking for degree programmes that align with their values. The fact that our programme links climate issues, nature conservation, and societal development makes it highly attractive,” says Karin Hjelm, Director of Studies and Associate Professor in Forest Management.
According to Karin, the increased visibility through new campaign collaborations – including one with the youth organisation Fältbiologerna – has played a key role.
“These campaigns clarify what the programme actually leads to. Young people get a concrete image of future career paths and can better relate to the programme content,” she says.
Value-Driven Marketing with Real Impact
Tashina Alavi, digital marketing specialist at SLU, led the university’s first campaign in partnership with civil society organizations engaging young people passionate about nature and climate.
“We focused on value-driven messages delivered by trusted voices through channels where our target audience is already active. This approach significantly boosted both our reach and impact,” says Tashina.
A Programme in Tune with the Times
Karin Hjelm believes the programme’s growth also reflects broader societal trends.
“Climate change, forest fires and sustainability are all highly topical issues. Forest and Landscape offers a strong, hands-on foundation in these areas – we highlight the forest not just as a resource for production, but as part of a larger system of sustainability and societal development.”
The programme consistently receives high scores in student evaluations – both in terms of content and overall quality. Courses are continuously updated to reflect current societal challenges and labour market needs.
Karin also highlights the international student group as a great asset. They bring diverse perspectives and create a dynamic in the classroom that deepens discussions. This enhances the understanding of the forest’s role in a global context.
Ending on a High Note
After several years as Director of Studies, Karin Hjelm is now handing over the role to her successor, Patrick Sherwood.
“It feels incredibly rewarding to end on a high note and pass the torch with such strong results,” she says.
