Welcome to Gigacow

Gigacow is an infrastructure initiative from SLU where we automatically retrieve information from dairy farms that are part of the network. We pay for genomic analysis of the cows and then retrieve this data from Växa Sverige, which makes it possible to combine genetic data and production data.

The aim is to bring research and development at SLU closer to the industry. By collecting data from production farms, we can conduct large-scale studies and ensure that research results can be translated more quickly into increased profitability.

As a long-term infrastructure, Gigacow is well placed to collect ideas and developments that are currently taking place on farms and compare them with available data for the benefit of both farmers and research. This will allow us to combine genomic breeding values with better metrics for production optimization in an environment where both technology and the environment are changing ever faster.

What we offer you as a Gigacow member

• We pay for genomic analysis through Växa Sverige
• You can collect your data for comparison and we are happy to help you compile your data for interpretation.
• We will send out offers and requests from researchers who want to supplement or collect more information. It is always up to you to answer yes or no.
• You can notify us if you no longer wish to provide data to Gigacow.

Checklist: To become a Gigacow member

• Answer the survey about the farm
• Signing a contract
• Planning sampling (genomic analysis)
• Install our download program on the computer with the management system

We will send out the contract as soon as we have your address and contact you to schedule sampling and installation. To be able to carry out sampling, your farm must be part of Växas Kokontrollen.

We will arrange the practicalities - by phone, skype or on site.
