Welcome to the course “Building Planning”!
The course addresses the planning of buildings and facilities for rural areas. Topics covered include, among others, the historical development of rural buildings, planning prerequisites, calculations of space and site requirements, the placement of buildings in the landscape and in relation to cultural traditions, architecture, sustainable building, choice of materials and construction technology, regulatory permits, cost calculations and economics, contract law and construction management, as well as new trends within the construction sector.
The course includes field trips/study visits, several written assignments, two seminar assignments, and a larger project assignment that provides practice in producing drawings and descriptions for different stages of the building process. The documentation shall demonstrate the ability to plan buildings from a holistic building science perspective, taking into account functional, structural, and architectural requirements. The quality of the project submission corresponds to the level of building permit documentation for new construction.
On the course page in Canvas you will find announcements, literature, lecture handouts, etc. throughout the course. Please note that the schedule may change. The current schedule is always the one available in Canvas! After you have registered for the course, you will gain access to the course page in Canvas. A link to Canvas can be found on the student web start page https://student.slu.se/
NOTE: The digital schedule that is available is based on room bookings and is not 100% up to date.
On the Canvas learning platform you will find, among other things, the following information:
• Course information including reading list, schedule, grading criteria, and course syllabus.
• Assignments: instructions for written assignments.
• Seminar assignments: instructions for two assignments presented during seminars.
• Project: instructions, templates, aids, etc. for the project work.
• Lectures: PDF documents from the lectures will be uploaded here.
• Literature: course compendia, books, articles, etc. linked to the course.
• Reference list: additional literature to support work on assignments and the project.
A substantial amount of material is already uploaded, and more will be added as the course progresses. The literature will be structured under headings. Work on improving the platform will continue during the course.
Under “Assignments” you must submit your assignments and project.

- Analyse planning conditions as a consequence of the type and design of the production enterprise
- Calculate and analyse the space and location requirements of some different rural enterprises
- Demonstrate an ability to plan, from an overall building science perspective, buildings and establishments with respect to functional and constructive requirements
- Prepare and assess documentation for planning permission and other official permits
- Prepare and analyse cost calculations and carry out building economics assessments
- Provide examples of, and motivate, idea flows in society concerning building work and adapt building projects to these.
Content
The course is based on lectures and reading of the literature, which provide the knowledge required to plan buildings and to prepare drawings and specifications. Students will also have the opportunity to carry out exercises and study trips, and shall actively participate in seminars. A major project work will be carried out and presented orally and in writing.
