Knowledge corresponding to 20 credits in veterinary nursing.
Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide basic knowledge of study design and common statistical terms, as well as to practise critical thinking and scientific approach.
After completing the course, students shall be able to:
- describe different types of study design, including their respective areas of application and limitations,
- describe and apply common descriptive and comparative statistical methods that are used to interpret biological data,
- discuss, interpret and assess the quality of study designs and basic statistical applications in scientific publications,
- independently identify a scientific question, write and present a minor literature study, focusing on skills in scientific writing and methodology.
Content
Focusing on basic epidemiology and biostatistics, lectures include different types of study design and the application of basic statistical methods, including strengths and limitations for biological questions and interpretation of data. During the course, the students perform a minor, supervised project in the form of a literature study, which includes identifying a scientific question within veterinary nursing, followed by a literature search, analysis of chosen scientific articles, a written report and an oral presentation focused on critical thinking. During the project, great emphasis is placed on the students’ ability to oppose and discuss their own work and the work of others. The course also includes practical calculation exercises and mandatory literature seminars.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
Approved verbal and written reporting on project work and discussion and examination of other students’ presentations, as well as approved participation in compulsory elements. Approved written examination
