Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide foundations in statistics with applications in the life sciences.
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Use relevant mathematical methods for solving biological and mathematical problems,
- give an account of central statistical notions and the usefulness of statistics for description and interpretation of biological data,
- use relevant selected methods and statistical software packages for processing, analysis and illustration of biological data,
- calculate confidence intervals and to perform hypothesis testing,
- analyse data by regression analysis.
Content
Lectures deal with theory. Lessons and computer exercises deal with practical exercises.
The course includes:
- Basic algebra, functions, logarithms,
- Descriptive statistics, including visualization of data, probability theory, common distributions, point estimation, confidence intervals,
- Hypothesis testing: inference of means and proportions; chi-square test and power,
- Simple linear regression.
The course is based on practical examples from various biological fields of application.
Compulsary parts occur within the statistics project.
Examination Formats and Requirements for Passing the Course
-Passed exercises and pass the written and / or oral examination and approved participation in compulsory parts
-Passed computer exercises
